The Paphiopedilum orchid is known as the slipper orchid, referring to the shape of its lips that resemble sandals or slippers. This orchid species is found in Indonesia and is protected under the CITES law and is included in Appendix 1. The study was conducted with the aim of knowing the morphological variations of the Paphiopedilum orchid species and the success of ex situ conservation in an effort to protect it from the threat of extinction. The research was conducted at the Experimental Garden of the Ornamental Plants Research Institute, Segunung, West Java in the period 2016-2020. The plant materials used were 30 species of Paphiopedilum sp orchids from the collection of the Ornamental Plants Research Institute. Morphological characterization was carried out on the characters of leaves, flowers and fruit. The seeds obtained were spread in Vacin & Went media, and observations were made including the success of germination and the duration of protocorm formation. The results of morphological observations obtained plant diversity of leaf characters including the diversity of shapes, colors, and leaf patterns. The diversity of flowers is found in the shape, pattern of flower parts with variations in patterns including plain, striped, speckled and their combinations. Other additional characters such as feathers and protrusions on the petals/synpetal are special characteristics of each Paphiopedilum orchid species. Self-pollinated fruit can be harvested at the age of 4-6 months. Seed growth to protocorm varies with a range of 0-more than 90%. Paphiopedilum violascens is the most difficult orchid to germinate. The results of this study can be used to determine the success of the cross and its conservation opportunities to protect against extinction.en_US
