Abstract
Sorghum (Sorghum bicolor) has long been cultivated by farmers in Indonesia. Sorghum variety of Suri 3 has been developed in the community but its production is still low and the taste needs to be improved. For this reason, research needs to be done to obtain genetic variations so that selection can be carried out. Mutations using gamma rays have been shown to increase generic diversity proved by better characters of sorghum compared to their parents. This study aimed to determine the effect of radiation on the morphological diversity of the M2 mutant strains of Suri 3 variety. The materials used were the second-generation mutant (M2) of sorghum variety of Suri 3 from gamma-ray irradiation 0, 40, 50, 60 and 70 Gy. Each line was planted as many as 50. The experiment was carried out at the Cikeumeuh Experimental Station of the ICABIOGRAD, Bogor. The observed variables were morphological characters including: plant height, stem diameter, leaf length, leaf width, seed and leaf color, seed shape, and panicle shape. The results showed that the radiation therapy caused changes in the character of seed and leaf color. Radiation with a dose of 50 and 60 Gy produced genotypes that ripened faster, namely 110 DAP. Leaf color became Strong Reddish Orange at 50 Gy and 60 Gy doses, while at 70 Gy dose treatment, the leaf color changed to Moderate Orange. Finally, there was a change in the color of the leaves to Greyish Olive Green at a dose of 40 Gy.
