Abstract
Leaf curl disease caused by tomato yellow leaf curl virus (TYLCV) and mosaic disease caused by cucumber mosaic virus (CMV) are biotic constraints that are often encountered in tomato (Solanum lycopersicum L.) cultivation. The use of tomato varieties resistant to two viruses is an effective alternative control for the diseases. In previous studies, double-crossing has been carried out to obtain tomatoes that have resistance to both viruses. This study aimed to evaluate the morpho-agronomic characters of two genetically engineered (GE) tomatoes resistant to TYLCV and CMV. The research was conducted at laboratory and screen house in IVEGRI, Lembang, West Bandung. The research material consisted of two tomato lines, namely F8-IC-CL-34-2-9-E2-2-T2E11 and F8-IC-CL-34-2-9-E2-2-T2E14, as well as three parents used in the double-crossing, namely CL 6046 (susceptible to TYLCV and CMV; non-GE), FLA456 (resistant to TYLCV; non-GE), and R8-110-11/CMV-A (resistant to CMV; GE). The study used a single-factor completely randomized design. The morpho-agronomic characters observed included quantitative characters, namely stem diameter, stalk length, leaf length, leaf width, flowering age, number of flowers per bunch, harvest age, weight per fruit, fruit diameter, fruit length, number of locules, and flesh thickness. Meanwhile, observations of qualitative characters included color (leaves, stems, flowers, petals, pistil, stamens, young fruit, and ripe fruit), growth type, plant uniformity, stem cross-sectional shape, and fruit shape. From the observations, the two GE tomato lines have similar morpho-agronomic characters to the three parents, both GE and non-GE. In addition, all test plants were uniform with indeterminate growth type. The data obtained will be used to prepare the dossier for the submission of the biosafety assessment of GE tomato lines.
