Abstract
‘Beneng’ Taro (Xanthosoma undipes K. Koch) has a high economic value and
a good prospect to utilize for food and ha good economic vakue. This plant is usually propagated by tubers, and this conventional method is not applicable to support high demand on seedling production. Technology on in vitro culture offers fast and convenient method to overcome this propagation problem. However, there are some challenges in in vitro propagation of Beneng taro, due to high contamination during explant
sterilization and slow lateral shoots growth. This study aims to obtain the best sterilization procedures and the best media propagation formula for shoot elongation, to support fast and massive Beneng taro seedling production. This study found the best sterilization procedure was obtained on STBe3 and the best shoot elongation formula was obtained on MS media supplemented with 1 mg/l Kinetin + 3 mg/l GA, which the highest shoots average was 0,89 ± 0,53 cm. Meanwhile, the highest shoots multiplication rate was found on single Kinetin treatment (1 mg/l) with the average
number of shoots produced was 1,8 ± 1,48 cm. Furthermore, results of this study will be applied on further experiment to support in vitro propagation of Beneng taro.
