AnggaraAbstract Effectiveness of Castor (Ricinus communis) Extract as an Antifertility Agent on Rice Field Rat. An experiment to study the effect of castor extract on the rice field rat (Rattus argentiventer) reproduction has been conducted in ICRR rodent laboratory in 2006. The experiment was arranged in a completely randomized design with 10 replicates. Treatments were five rates of castor extract of 2; 1.6; 1.2; 0.8; 0.4 ml/100 g body weight/day. The check was aquabidest at the rate of 2 ml/100 g body weight/day given at 5 consecutive days to the rats. The castor extract was given orally using one ways single dose method. After treatment, the rats were kept individually in a single cage for 14 days then were kept together with the non-treated rats in single cage for 7 days to let the couples cross-mated, then each female rat was kept for 21 days to monitor its pregnancy. They were killed afterward to obtain their reproductive organs. The data collected were the body weight (before and after treatment); pregnancy; number of embryos; ovary weight; testes weight; and sperm concentration. Results of the experiment indicated that castor extract given at the dose of 2 ml/100 g body weight/day for 5 consecutive days, led to infertility of the female. The castor extracts also decreased the number of active sperm of about 64.2-90.7%. Abstrak Percobaan untuk mempelajari pengaruh ekstrak biji jarak sebagai antifertilitas nabati terhadap tikus sawah (Rattus argentiventer) telah dilakukan di Laboratorium Tikus, Balai Besar Peneltiian Tanaman Padi pada tahun 2006. Percobaan disusun dalam rancangan acak lengkap dengan 10 ulangan (5 jantan dan 5 betina). Perlakuan terdiri atas 5 dosis ekstrak biji jarak, yaitu 2 ml, 1.6 ml, 1,2 ml, 0,8 ml, dan turut selama 5 hari. Pemberian ekstrak biji jarak dilakukan secara oral dengan metode dosis tunggal. Setelah perlakuan, hewan uji dipelihara selama 14 hari, kemudian masing-masing dikawinkan dalam satu kandang dengan tikus non-perlakuan selama 7 hari, dan setelah itu dipisahkan lagi. Masing-masing hewan uji dipelihara selama 21 hari untuk menunggu kebuntingan dan dilakukan pembedahan organ reproduksi. Pengamatan meliputi berat badan tikus sebelum dan sesudah perlakuan, kebuntingan, jumlah embrio, berat ovarium, berat testis, dan konsentrasi sperma. Hasil percobaan menunjukkan bahwa dosis ekstrak biji jarak 2 ml/100 g bb/hari selama 5 hari berturut-turut, menyebabkan kemandulan atau tidak terjadi kebuntingan pada tikus sawah betina. Ekstrak biji jarak juga menurunkan 64,2-90,7% jumlah sperma aktif tikus jantan.
