(Sekretariat Badan Penelitian dan Pengembangan Pertanian, 2021-06-05) Bin Arif, Abdullah; Sasmitaloka, Kirana S.; Banurea, Imia Ribka; Diyono, Wahyu; Budiyanti, Agus; Winarti, Christina
Sorghum is one of the potential cereals commodity to be developed as food and industrial material. Nevertheless, sorghum grains are easily attacked by lices so they cannot be stored for a long time. Lice attacks can cause damage and losses on sorghum. This study aimed to extend the shelf life of brown sorghum grain using natural extracts and plastic packaging which are easy to obtain by farmers at low prices. The study used a completely randomized design in factorial, consisting of two factors, namely the type of plastic packaging (Polyethylene/PE and Polypropilene/PP) and the type of natural extracts (without treatment, garlic, red chili, cloves, cinnamon, coriander, coffee, pepper, galangal) and yeast tape. Each treatment was replicated 2 times. The observation variables in this study were the number of lice, grain weight loss, bulk density, proximate, starch, amylose, and amylopectin contents. The results showed that storage of brown sorghum grains in PP plastic package and treated with clove extract was the best treatment to prevent the lice attacks / Sitophilus SP indicated by the lowest of lice population, weight loss, carbohydrate loss, and moisture content.
