Farming systems research is neither a new term nor a new methodology. Many techniques in this field originate from early 20th-century farm management research developed by agricultural economists. As noted by Simmonds (1983), international agricultural research centers (IARCs) shifted toward farming systems research when they realized Green Revolution successes were mainly limited to rice and wheat in areas with adequate water, necessary input infrastructure, and market access. Over time, the analytical focus shifted from multiple cropping research programs to cropping systems, and ultimately to farming systems. In Indonesia, the application of farming systems research methodologies builds on a long history of farm management case studies and area surveys. A key example includes studies by the Agro Economic Survey/Rural Dynamics Study, which analyzed all household enterprises, including non-agricultural income sources. Additionally, the National Panel of Farmers Research Program (Patanas) under the Center for Agro Economic Research (CAER) represents an adaptation of the farming systems approach. More directly, farming systems research in Indonesia developed from the IRRI-sponsored rice-based cropping systems program, which became a core element of the research agenda for the Agency for Agricultural Research and Development (AARD) (Syarifuddin et al., 1984).
