Description
Cashew belongs to the class Dicotyledoneae, order Sapaindales, family Anacardiaceae, genus Anacardium, and species Occidentale. It is most prominent and economically important member of this family. Two varieties are recognized, Cashew variety Americanum and cashew variety Indicum, distinguished by characteristics, pendicule: nut ratios 10:1 and 3:1, respectively.Cashew is a perennial crop. The canopy of the tree may be umbrella shaped, conical, or hemisphere and may reach a height of 15 metres. The growth of cashew trees is influenced by the environment. Trees may bear fruit when it only 1 year old, and may continoue to produce for 50 years.Cashew flowers consist of male flowers and complete or hermaphrodite flowers in a ratio of (6 – 7) : (1 – 2). Fertilization is by bees, ants, and other insects, and by wind. Fruits attain maximum growth one month after fertilization.
