Abstract
Abstract Suitability of Placement of Trap Barrier System (TBS) in Irrigated Rice Ecosystem. Basical mechanism work of the TBS based on the attractiveness of rats to the rice crops at early the generative growth stages. For the effectiveness of the TBS, therefore, it is very important to select appropriate location for the correct placement of the TBS. An experiment to study the suitable rat habitats for TBS placement was conducted in two blocks of farmer's rice-field rat endemic area in Pabuaran Sub-district, Subang District, West Java Province during the dry season of 2005. In the site of study four TBS units of 15 m x 15 m in size were established near the rat habitats such as the irrigation canal, road bank, village border, and the center of rice field. The short-maturity rice variety, Dodokan, was planted as the trap crop at the same transplanting time with those at the surrounding farmer's crops, called as synchronous TBS. Results of the study indicated that by planting the Dodokan rice variety, provided the trap crops attracted the rats to come into the TBS and made the synchronous TBS became effective to capture rats, even though the population of rat during DS 2005, was low. Total rat captured were 52 rats consisted of 36 female and 16 males. The highest number of rats was those captured by the TBS located near the road habitat and the lowest was those captured by the TBS located at the center of the rice crops. It is recommended, therefore that to function effectively, the TBS should be located in irrigation channel, road bank, and the village border. Abstrak Prinsip TBS adalah ketertarikan tikus sawah terhadap tanaman padi, yang mencapai stadium generatif lebih dahulu. Tanaman perangkap, sebagai komponen TBS yang berfungsi sebagai penarik tikus, harus ditempatkan di lokasi yang paling tepat agar TBS mampu berfungsi efektif. Percobaan lapangan untuk mempelajari lokasi penempatan TBS yang paling sesuai untuk pengendalian ikus sawah telah dilakukan di dua dua hamparan sawah irrigasi endemik tikus di Kecamatan Pabuaran, Kabupaten Subang, Jawa Barat pada MK 2005. Pada setiap hamparan sawah, ditempatkan masing-masing 4 unit TBS berukuran 15 m x 15 m di dekat habitat tikus, yaitu di tanggul irigasi, di perbatasan kampung, di tanggul pematang besar, dan di tengah hamparan sawah. Tanaman padi berumur genjah (varietas Dodokan) sebagai perangkap, ditanam bersamaan dengan waktu tanam petani dan diharapkan agar tanaman varietas genjah tersebut mencapai stadium generatif lebih dulu dari tanaman sekitar milik petani. Hasil penelitian menunjukkan bahwa pada saat penelitian berlangsung populasi tikus sangat rendah. Selama 76 hari pengamatan, sebanyak 52 ekor tikus, terdiri atas 16 jantan dan 36 betina, mendatangi TBS dan tertangkap dalam bubu. Ini menunjukkan bahwa TBS mampu berfungsi untuk menarik tikus datang ke dalam TBS. Tikus mulai tertangkap ketika tanaman perangkap berumur 2 minggu dan paling banyak pada TBS yang ditempatkan di dekat pematang besar, sedangkan yang paling sediki adalah pada TBS di habitat tengah sawah. Berdasarkan hasil tersebut, agar TBS berfungsi efektif, direkomendasikan TBS sebaiknya ditempatkan di dekat tanggul irigasi, di tanggul jalan, dan di batas perkampungan.
