The effort to provide food for the Indonesian would become more difficult in the future due primary to the high rate of population increase and the changes of productive agricultural land into non-agriculture function. There are a total of 385.407 ha dry land areas available in the Province of South Sumatra, which are potentially good to cultivate upland rice. Unfortunately, only a total of 52.679 ha (13.7%) were utilized, in which due to lack of knowledge of the farmers in utilizing the areas, hence the productivity was still low. Farmers do not know how to carry out the proper management of cropping rice in the upland ecosystem, while improved upland rice varieties were also still limited. A trial to evaluate two breeding lines of upland rice developed by the Indonesian Center for Rice Research was conducted in Sumbawa Village, Banyuasin III Sub-district, Banyuasin District, during the wet season of 2008/2009. The objective of the trial was to evaluate the adaptability and the yield potentials of these two breeding lines grown in the dry land of South Sumatra. These two breeding lines were planted in plot of 20 m² in size, arranged in a Randomized Block Design with three replications. Results of this evaluation indicated that the yields of SEB.8FA-67-5 and SEB.8FA-300-2 were 3.7 t and 4.3 V ha, respectively. Both rice breeding lines were medium and early maturing type of rice possessing attractive agronomic characters.
