The study was carried out at tidal swampy area of South Kalimantan representing different hydrological zones. The area was delineated based on the tidal influence into zone A (area inundated by tidal water on every tide), zone B (area inundated at high tide), zone C/D (area where the hydrology is influenced by tidal movement but the area is never inundated by tidal water). Temporal and seasonal CH, and N2O emissions from each zone was then determined by chamber method at late dry season of year 2006 including hybrid rice varieties. The emissions in each zone were compared and be used to justify the affectivity of tidal swamp typology as mitigation option in reducing greenhouse gas emissions. Soil and soil-water properties were also determined in order to elucidate the factor(s) affecting gas emissions. The results showed that the CH, and N2O emissions were influenced by the swamp land typology. The stronger tidal influences the higher CH emissions were observed (i.e., zone A>zone B>zone C>zone D). There were correlations between soil physical properties and CH, emission but not the N2O emissions. Emission indexes (ratio of total emission to the grain yield) was the highest in zone A, followed by zone D and zone B. The lowest emission index was in zone C. Taking also the economical aspect into consideration, it was concluded that tidal zone B can be developed for further enlargement of paddy area in Indonesia
