Selection of Upland Rice Lines Suitable for Acid Soil. Acid soil of Red-Yellow Podzolic occupies the largest part of the uplands in Indonesia. The major constrains to high yield of rice in the acid soil are blast disease and acid soil related problems such as Al toxicity and nutrient disorders. This study was to identify rice breeding lines suitable for acid soil. Breeding materials consisting of 40 breeding lines and varieties were tested at two sites of Red-Yellow Podzolic soils different in acidify of pH 5.0 and 4.2 in Lampung during wet season of 1996/97. At each site, the experiment was conducted with 2.5 x 1.0 m2 plots size arranged in RBD with three replication. Greenhouse and laboratoiy experiments were also conducted for selecting tolerance to Al toxicity, resistance to blast disease and amylose content. The selection for tol erance to Al toxicity was done on Yoshida solution treated with 60 ppm A13+ The selection for blast resistance was conducted using artificial inoculation. Whereas, the amylose content analysis was conducted with iudo-colorimetry method. Nine selected breeding lines and varieties ob tained yielding 1.03-1.55 t/ha and 1.69-2.66 t/ha at site with low and high soil pH respectively which were higher than or same as the check variety Way Rarem yielding 1.00 t/ha at low pH and 1.64 t/ha at high pH site. All of the breeding lines and varieties were resistant to blast disease and had different amylose content ranging 21-27% related to soft, medium or hard texture of cooked rice. Among them TB161ETB-19, TB5G-TB-2, TB160E-TB-4, B8503E-Tb-9-B-3, Grogol, Cinggir Putri and Salumpikit were tolerant to Al whereas TB177E-TB- 28-B-3 and TB177E-TB-30-B-2 were moderately tolerant to Al toxicity. B8503 E-TB-9-B-3 as the top yielded at low pH as well as the high pH sites. Not all of breeding lines tolerant to Al toxicity had high yield at low soil pH site, on the other hand not all of breeding lines showing high yield were tolerant to Al toxicity, indicating that the constraint to high yield of rice at the particular soil was not only due to Al toxicity.en_US
