dc.descriptionThe issue of food scarcity due to high population growth, continuous imports, and the massive conversion of agricultural land has prompted the government to pursue large-scale agriculture to meet food needs. Merauke has been the target of large-scale agriculture since 2005 with the Program Merauke Integrated Rice Estate (MIRE), Merauke Integrated Food and Energi Estate (MIFEE), and Lumbung Pangan Nasional (LPN) programs. Many lessons were learned from implementing these programs, including productivity, suitability, availability of land, water, social, cultural, economic, and environmental issues. This paper aims to discuss lessons learned from similar programs in the past and identifies potentials that could be developed to minimise failures. The method used was a literature review and interviews with key persons of these programs. The results showed that Merauke still has potential as a contributor to food fulfilment, with considerations: (1) minimising land clearing from the forest; (2) increasing productivity through the local corporate system; (3) the use of farmers as workers in corporations; (4) introducing environmentally friendly agriculture and the integration of modern agriculture and animal husbandry; and (5) considering post-on-farm downstream conditions.en
