| dc.description.abstract | Strategic Use of the Bank Gene for the Conservation of Plant Germplasm. Semuel Leunufna. Convention on Biological Diversity held in Rio de Jenairo, Brasil, 1992, granted the right to posses and to manage the genetic resources to the countries in which the materials exist and evolve. This decision is surely beneficial for the diveloping/tropical countries which posses a great diversity of the biological resources, but at the same time it obligates them to participate actively in the conservation and sustainable use of the resources. Implementation of the Rio convention through ex situ conservation specificly through gene banks has been given a serious attention both by IPGRI and various nations in the world. Ex situ conservation through gene bank is useful as the back up to the in situ conservation and provides an easy means to access and to use the collected germplasm, beside Its uses In the genetic improvement of the materials, readiness of the materials to be used in research, environmental restoration and recovery of genetic base in specific areas as well as in plant breeding. These benefits may be realized through a clear definition of the objectives followed by an effective implementation of an organizational structure and activities of the gene bank such as leader ship, accession entry, reproduction, evaluation, collection, documentation and distribution. Furthermore, implementation of the results of Rio convention through ex situ conservation both nationally in several countries and internationally through the coordination of IPGRI as well as some challenges faced by Indonesia are discussed. | en_US |
