dc.descriptionPenelitian bertujuan untuk memperoleh benih pinang yang cepat berkecambah dan daya kecambah yang tinggi. Penelitian dilakukan di KP. Mapanget, Balai Penelitian Tanaman Palma, selama dua bulan (Mei - Juli 2011). Benih yang digunakan adalah aksesi pinang Sumatera Barat yang ditanam di KP. Kayuwatu Balai Penelitian Tanaman Palma. Penelitian berbentuk percobaan faktorial 2 x 5 x 3, menggunakan Rancangan Acak Kelompok (RAK) sehingga terdapat 30 unit percobaan. Setiap unit percobaan menggunakan 10 benih. Faktor A = pengupasan sabut (A), yang terdiri atas: benih tidak dikupas (A0) dan benih dikupas (A1). Faktor B jenis mulsa, terdiri atas: tanpa mulsa (B0), daun pinang (B1), daun kelapa (B2), sabut pinang (B3) dan sabut kelapa (B4). Hasil penelitian menunjukkan bahwa tidak ada pengaruh interaksi antara pengupasan benih dan pemberian mulsa terhadap kecepatan berkecambah tetapi mempengaruhi daya kecambah benih pinang. Namun secara factor tunggal, pengupasan benih dan jenis mulsa mempengaruhi kecepatan berkecambah. Kata kunci : Pengupasan sabut, mulsa, kecepatan berkecambah, daya kecambah, pinang.ABSTRACTEffect of Peeling Husk and Type of Mulch on Germination Rate and Viability of Arecanut (Areca catechu L.)The study was conducted in the experimental station of IPRI in Mapanget from May to July, 2012 to obtain rapid and high percentages of germination of betel seeds. A factorial experiment 2 x 5 x 3 was laid-out in a randomized block design with 30 experimental units. Two factors, stripping seeds (factor A) and types of mulch (factor B) were used. The factor A was consisted of two levels, without stripping seeds (A0) and stripping seeds (A1). The factor B consisted of without mulch (B0), betel leaves (B1), coconut leaves (B2), betel coir (B3), and coconut coir (B4). The results showed that there is no interaction effect of two factors on germination rate of betel seeds. However, as a single factor stripping seeds ang mulch type affect the germination rate. Interaction between stripping seeds and mulch types affect the viability of betel nut (A1) can speed-up germination rate 14.33 days after sowing.
