Abstract
Description
Preliminary study on the weight losses of fruit of Solanum kharsianum var. KDL after harvesting.Processing of S. khasianum var. KDL fruit into glikoalkaloid and further into solasodine is too complicated to be done on planting site. Therefore, after harvesting, the fruit has to be stores on site, waiting for transportation to the processing area, and during the sequence, the harvest undergoes weight losses. A preliminary study was done at Manoko Experimental Garden, Lembang, West java (1200 m above sea level) to over-come the fruit weight loss. Two methods of harvest, i.e. (A) cutting with scissors, (B) pulling (hard picking) at five stages of fruit maturity, i.e: dark green (DG), yellowish green (YG), greenish yellow (GY), yellow (Y) and dark yellow (DY). The result showed that in average, harvesting by means of cutting reduced the fruit weight 6.32%, compared to 23.77% by pulling, while there was no significant difference in weight loss due to harvesting the fruit at different maturity stages, although harvesting at DG or Y stages tended to minimize the losses, i.e. 5.44% in case of cutting and 20.96% by pulling.
