Abstract
Glutinous rice has a low amylose and high amylopectin content. Phenotypic diversity among glutinous rice can be known through its morphological characters. Gunung Kidul is one of districts in Daerah Istimewa Yogyakarta’s which has local glutinous rice varieties. The purpose of this study was to observe morphological characters of two local glutinous rice varieties from Gunung Kidul, namely Waler glutinous rice and Serang glutinous rice. The identification of morphological characters, beside to determine Gunung Kidul local glutinous rice, was also to complete information of registering local varieties process. The process of registration and release varieties is an effort to provide legal protection for ownership varieties status. Morphological characterization was carried out referring to the guide of rice descriptions. The results showed that Waler glutinous rice and Serang glutinous rice were different based on their morphological characters. Waler glutinous rice has 12.82% amylose content and Serang glutinous rice has 2.48% of amylose content. Both of them have been registered in the Center of Plant Variety Protection and Agricultural Permit as rice belonging to Gunung Kidul’s and given the name of Waler Handayani and Serang Handayani.
