The agricultural sector plays an important role in the economic structure of Rokan Hilir Regency (50%), supporting the industrial and trade sectors. The superior agricultural commodities consist of: oil palm, rubber and coconut, and several supporting commodities, including: rice, corn, and purple taro. Keladi (Java: Talas) is cultivated by many farmers in Sinaboi District, Rokan Hilir Kabapuaten with an area of about 450 ha. The farmer's income obtained from the current taro farming is around 20-30 million per hectare per season (eight months) or an average of 2.50-3.75 million per month (Tinta Riau, 2016). These results can still be improved through technological innovation and institutions as well as local government policies. Therefore, research / assessment needs to be done. The research objectives were (1) to obtain data and information on characteristics of purple taro farming in Sinaboi District, Rokan Hilir Regency, Riau Province, and (2) to produce a strategy, direction, and policy for developing purple taro in Rokan Hilir Regency, Riau Province. The results showed that the Purple Keladi cultivation carried out by farmers in Sinaboi District was very potential to be developed. Although productivity is still low, it is financially profitable. The direction of developing purple taro that must be done include: (1) maintaining and increasing the area of farming land; (2) increasing knowledge in the field of purple taro cultivation technology (facilities and infrastructure available) to increase productivity, production and quality; and (3) developing business activities for post-harvest taro to increase added value and competitiveness.
